The FA Cup Proves To Be A Nice Little Earner

The FA Cup Proves To Be A Nice Little Earner
Although Gus Poyet has openly stated he doesn't rate the cup competitions, The FA Cup has proved to be a bit of a money spinner for The Seagulls.

Poyet's men were dumped out of the first rounds of the Carling Cup and Johnstones Paint Trophy, but the FA Cup has been a different story. Despite not taking the FA Cup too seriously and fielding weakened teams, The Seagulls have beaten Woking, FC United of Manchester and last years finalists, Portsmouth to progress to the 4th round for the second consecutive season.

Edging past Woking on penalties in the first round netted the club 18,000 in prize money, as well as 30,000 from ESPN for the live broadcast at the Kingfield Stadium.

The second round provided FC United of Manchester as the opposition, going to a replay at Bury's Gigg Lane. The Albion pocketed 27,000 for the 4-0 win in front of the ESPN cameras, which added a further 46,500 to the coffers.

The 3-1 victory in the 3rd Round South Coast derby against Portsmouth earned the club 67,500, and it was the first time that Gus Poyet played anything like a full strength team in the competition.

Should The Albion progress past Championship high flyers Watford in the fourth round, they will earn themselves 90,000 in prize money as well as 40% of the gate receipts from Vicarage Road.

So far The Albion have earned 189,000 in prize money and TV coverage bonuses, but that doesn`t include the 40% of gate receipts from the 5 matches.

200,000ish is not a bad little earner from something that isn't high on Gus Poyet's priority list, and it may even come in handy during the January transfer window!
