Derby 3 Brighton 0 (Report)
6/12/14 - 3pm
Derby's dominance over Brighton continued as they recorded a fifth straight victory over us, added to all four meetings last season, in a game that threatened to see us heavily thrashed at one point.
At 3-0 down with just 20 minutes played it threatened to be a long afternoon but Derby weren't able to add to a blistering 10 minute spell at the iPro Stadium on Saturday with those three early goals the only they managed in the end, it was still a 3-0 thrashing though!
The Derby intentions were clear from the start, we always knew this would be a difficult afternoon but we were being forced back into our own half as Derby dominated the early proceedings with David Stockdale's save stopping Chris Martin from scoring within a minute.
A Derby breakthrough wouldn't be too long in coming though.
Jeff Hendrick crossed into the area, Martin collected this and cut onto his left foot to shot past Stockdale and give them a 10th minute lead. And just five minutes later a perfectly delivered ball from Craig Forsyth gave Johnny Russell a chance with him one on one with Stockdale and there wasn't ever any doubt as he chipped his effort over the Albion goalkeeper who had come out to meet him.
Suddenly Albion had some hope when Darren Bent headed home a Jake Forster-Caskey cross just a few minutes after the second Derby goal, this didn't stand though as an offside flag ruled this out.
Hopes of an unlikely comeback faded again with that disallowed goal and they were ended just two minutes later when Martin headed home Cyrus Christie's cross to make it 3-0 with just 20 minutes played.
Joao Teixeira wasn't expected to be in the matchday squad, let alone the starting XI, but as soon as the third went in he was taken off with Rohan Ince brought on as we sought to them make this a damage limitation exercise.
Derby's work was done, they need not exert themselves too much and we just couldn't offer anything going forward as we saw out the remainder of the first half without conceding again.
In the second half though Derby came again.
Simon Dawkins threatened before a mistake from Stockdale almost allowed another goal when Craig Bryson's effort slipped through his hands. This sneaked towards goal before hitting the post and was cleared away by Aaron Hughes.
Stockdale did make saves from Hendrick and Martin, more than once to deny him his hat trick, other efforts failed to test him as the Championship lead was retained by Derby and a possible Championship exit, into League 1, looks a very possible thing for Albion as we remain in the bottom three.
