Blackpool 0 - Brighton 1

Blackpool 0 Brighton 1

Boxing Day was proved to be nothing more than a blip as Brighton put the disappointment of the long unbeaten run coming to an end behind them with a win at Blackpool on Sunday.

With Blackpool being on such a miserable run, which came after such a good start to the season, Brighton would have gone into this game confidence despite the Boxing Day defeat at Charlton and we had plenty of chances but taking one way enough to leave Bloomfield Road with a 1-0 win.

Ulloa looked to continue his goalscoring form from Boxing Day early on at Bloomfield, and with Gilkes beaten in the Blackpool goal Leo looked set for his third in two games but that came back off the post to frustrate us early on.

Brighton did manage to take the lead in the end though as Calderon rampaged forward from defence, he was like Forrest Gump who just felt like running, so he did and riffled in from the edge of the box. Gilkes might think he could have done better but we weren't complaining, as it was 1-0 to Brighton.

Calderon had an excellent game all round and went on another run in the second half, he got in another shot but this time Blackpool 'keeper Giles was up to the task and denied him and Brighton a second.

Blackpool didn't offer that much of a threat to Brighton on the whole but had a few half chances and Basham (in particular) did remind us that they were still in the game, and would be all the while we had just a slender lead, but his header was very well parried away by Kuszczak.

LuaLua almost made certain of the points with Gilkes again beaten, but once more the post frustrated us but we'd done enough with the first half goal to get back to winning ways and make it four points from a possible nine on offer over Christmas. A little less than we might have wanted but still a fairly good return to keep us in the promotion hunt.
