Instant Reactions - Brighton v Crystal Palace (8/1/18)

Instant Reactions - Brighton v Crystal Palace (8/1/18)

Following today's clash between Brighton and Crystal Palace, here are the instant reactions from both managers.

Brighton hosted Crystal Palace at the Amex Stadium for a 7.45pm kick off in the FA Cup third round on Monday January 8, with the hosts taking a two one victory.

Dale Stephens opened the scoring in the 25th minute but by that point each side had lost a player to injury.

Palace responded more strongly in the second half and found the net through Bakary Sako with 20 minutes to go, but Glenn Murray made his former side pay with three minutes to play as he hit the winner.

The goal itself was controversial as many believed the ball had come off his arm before it went into the net and with the game being the first with a Video Assistant Referee trial at club level, many were confused as to why the match day referee didn't reference the system.

There was however a clear chat and the consensus appears to be it came off his knee, so there was no need to use the system.

That won't stop Palace fans from questioning it as they travel home though.

Krul, Schelotto, Goldson, Hunemeier, Bong, March, Stephens (Propper 61), Kayal, Izquierdo, Brown (Baldock 6), Hemed (Murray 81).

Dunk, Skalak, Maenpaa, Murray, Rosenior.

Crystal Palace:

Hennessey, Fosu-Mensah, Kelly, Delaney, Schlupp (Souare 13), Cabaye, Riedewald, Townsend (Kaikai 45), McArthur, van Aanholt, Sako.

Speroni, Milivojevic, Tomkins, Lee Chung-yong, Wan-Bissaka.

Speaking to the BBC's cameras a short time after match day referee Andre Marriner blew the final whistle, Brighton manager Chris Hughton explained.

'I could not see it clearly. I had to wait until we came in, but it has been very clear that we didn't need VAR. In the first half we were very good, but they came out strong in the second half, but it took a wonder goal off his weaker foot to get them back to level terms.'

With on loan Chelsea loanee Izzy Brown being taken off injured.

'He was very unlucky, it is what stopped me enjoying tonight. We will access him tomorrow to see the extent of it.'

'It is as much about the league, for as much as we like a cup run and wherever it will take us but staying in the league is the priority for us.'

Crystal Palace manager Roy Hodgson in his comparative interview explained.

'In a team that is enormously hit by injuries we've lost two others, and that's the worst thing for me tonight. Andros Townsend and Jeff Schlupp are unlikely to play for a period of time and that's the last thing we wanted. We already had seven players out - it's making enormous demands on our squad.'

Hodgson went on to say about the winning goal and the VAR system.

'We deserved a draw but they put Murray on and he scores the late winner. I can only believe that they have looked at it - you can see it a few times and it's a close one, it looked like handball but when you see it again there's a good chance that it wasn't. Congratulations to the VAR system. One can only hope that the VAR system assisted in the matter. Hopefully it has made the right decision. It was always going to happen, there would be a decision which would come up. It worked well. They decided that the goal should stand and I can't disagree with that.'
