Hughton Previews Palace Cup Clash

Hughton Previews Palace Cup Clash

Manager Chris Hughton has now met with the media to give his thoughts ahead of Brighton's third round FA Cup clash with Crystal Palace.

Brighton welcome Palace to the Amex Stadium later this evening (Monday) for a 7.45pm kick off and there were a number of topics discussed as Hughton met with the Official Site.

Giving a team update and the state of play with injuries, he explained.

'We have no fresh concerns on the injury front, because we`ve gone through a good period where players are available to us, obviously we hope that continues. We can make a few changes because we`re in a very good position and we have a lot of competition for places. If you look back at the last five or six games, we`ve made a fair few changes and we will certainly use that competitive edge that we have on Monday.'

Hughton went on to say.

'It will be a strong side and if you look at the team there`s a lot of people who have played within the squad. Most of them have figured in the first team and we`ll put out a team that we feel can win the game, because we know what the match means to the supporters and it`s one which we want to win.'

As for Palace and the rivalry.

'We`re playing a Premier League team in an FA Cup game, whilst we`re also in a competitive league and I am conscious of that - we need to get the most we can out of our squad. We`ve done okay so far in the league, but we want to maintain and protect that and so there are a lot of balances that I have to get around.'

'It`s a big game for the fans and they`ve been extraordinary in my time here - we know what this match means and it lifts a few more emotions than normal.'

The game also sees the introduction of the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) technology.

'We`re going to be briefed this afternoon (Friday) on it and we have to wait for the end product. I understand the reasons for trying it and there is a clamour for technology when decisions are made. This is an experiment and depending on how it goes, it might be full time - but we can`t complain when it does happen.'

He went on to say.

'We`ve already seen differing opinions of panellists and referees, so I don`t think it will ever clear completely, but people do get used to changes within the game. As clubs, coaches and managers, you just want to get on with the game - the technology is a side show because we`ll both be trying to get a win for our respective teams. We might get through the whole of the game and it might not be used anyway but we always welcome new technology.'
