Hughton On Big Swansea Win

Hughton On Big Swansea Win

Brighton manager Chris Hughton has reflected on a 'big win' against Swansea City at the weekend and he feels the club are already 'exceeding expectations' in our first year in the Premier League.

A Glenn Murray strike at the Liberty Stadium returned all three points and Hughton told the Official Site as he met with the media following the game that it was all down to the hardwork the players put into to each and every game.

'Every three points are always a big three points, particularly away from home and when you`re the club that we are. We learned a fair bit from our performance at West Ham, and fortunately for us, we were able to take some of that into our performance today. At this moment we`ve got a lot of players available and really good competition for places, but we`ve learned what it takes to compete in this division, very quickly. It was a good all-round performance today. Apart from our goal, they probably had the best two chances and we had to dig deep, but we were worthy of the win today.'

With the hosts almost claiming a point in stoppage time as an effort came back off the bar, the gaffer was also delighted with another clean sheet.

'They`re a team that have had a difficult start, but they`ve got really good quality on the pitch and we had to defend well at times. It always gives you a chance (a clean sheet), but they had a couple of good opportunities. Maty Ryan had to make a super save and they hit the crossbar. That`s the margins and it could have gone against us in the end, but we stuck in there and it`s always better going into an international break on the back of a win.'

With Murray getting his fourth goal in the last three games, he obviously came in for praise once again.

'That`s what Glenn does, he has a knack. Certainly in a game where there were always going to be very few chances for us, you hope that your striker can get on the end of one of the opportunities. But it was a brilliant ball from Anthony Knockaert and he thoroughly deserves that assist.'

With the international break now in full swing, he added.

'I`m delighted but I`ve got the biggest responsibility to make sure everyone remains grounded. We`ve given a good account of ourselves over these 11 games. We`ve got a really big end of November and December coming up, where we`ve got some really tough games.'

Reflecting on the season overall once again as we go into that break, Hughton felt we were doing better than many expected - including his own conservative hopes.

'Our start has surpassed my expectations, and most newly-promoted teams would probably say the same. But you`re always guarded and we now go into a very heavy, difficult period after the international break. We`ve got difficult games in that December period, and I suppose that period will say something about what we`re like as a side.'

Adding.

'It`s always more pleasing when, certainly in that last period, you come under a lot pressure, because of the changes that they made. We had chances to extend that lead in that period, as the game opened up, but you obviously have to defend well during that. We`re in quite a nice rhythm at the moment, and sometimes that carries you through to the next game. Overall, it was a very good away performance.'
