Newcastle Delight For Hughton

Manager Chris Hughton has hailed Brighton's solidarity as they picked up their second three points of the campaign against Newcastle United yesterday.

Hosting Rafa Benitez's side at the Amex Stadium for the game, Tomer Hemed hit the all important winner in the one nil victory and speaking to the Official Site as he met with the media following the game, Hughton couldn't have been more pleased - especially given the pressure Newcastle put us under at the end of the game as they chased the leveller.

'The goal was the one opportunity we took in a tight game, and we had to dig deep at times. The way the game was going, we didn`t feel there was going to be a lot of chances. We certainly had to keep a clean sheet against a very good Newcastle side and just look for those moments. We needed that little bit of brilliant or fortune, but it was certainly good to get the clean sheet today.'

The win moves Brighton up to 13th place in the Premier League table and Hughton was delighted with the result, especially as Newcastle had won their last three on the trot.

'It was always going to be a test. What you're always going to get from a Newcastle side is that they`re going to push and they do have good options. It was a little bit nervy when they had a few free-kicks outside the box, because in Matt Ritchie and Jonjo Shelvey they've got really good quality.'

'We had to dig deep to see it out and show that bit of resilience. There wasn`t a lot in it, but overall, I think we deserved it. We`ve learned a lot in these six games, and with the points we've got now - seven points - I think that's a decent return.'

In the 89th minute Hemed created a second talking point in the game where he inadvertently trod on DeAndre Yedlin's ankle but Hughton didn't believe anything would come of it as it was accidental.

'My very first impression is there was no intent. There has been contact but my first impression is no intent and knowing the individual I would say no intent.'
