Ankergren Enjoying His New Brighton Position

Casper Ankergren's first pre-season at Brighton when he isn't a player has proven the 'perfect transition' for the former goalkeeper.

Having decided to retire at the end of the promotion winning season Ankergren remained at Brighton, his home for the past seven years, taking up a coaching role at the Amex Stadium.

The Dane was appointed as assistant first team goalkeeping coach to Ben Roberts, who has already given him specific jobs to carry out during pre-season helping Ankergren switch from being a player in training to a coach.

He told the Official Website: 'I`m Ben Roberts' assistant and he`s already given me jobs that I need to look into; besides that I can learn a lot from him. It`s going to be a very interesting year for me. It`s a really good chance for me to see what`s going on from the coaching side of things, but still be on the training pitch when I am needed. I haven`t played that many games over the last couple of years, but I love training and being in and around the boys. For me, it`s a perfect transition.'

In many ways Ankergren retried several years ago as he hadn't made many of his 77 appearances for Brighton in recent times but the keeper was still an important member of the squad.

Ankergren went on to praise Roberts when he said: 'For me, Ben is the best goalkeeping coach I`ve had in my career. He knows everything, and what`s going on in every league. I bet I could ask him about any keeper in Europe and he would know even the smallest details.'

Adding: 'He`s always well prepared in everything he does. That`s something that I want to learn from. He`s very clever and I`ve enjoyed working with him over the last two years as player. Now I am doing other jobs that he has asked me to look into. I go and see him every morning, have a chat about what we`re doing and that will be my day-to-day routine. I will fill in wherever I need to; there`s no routine as such.'

His main responsibilities will revolve around Ankergren keeping a close on the potential future keepers at Brighton as he's working closely with Christian Walton - expected to head out on loan - and U23 shot-stopper Robert Sanchez.

In order to help he needs to be a 'role model' for them and is excited by the talent coming through at the Amex.

'I try to be a good role model for them and be a person they can come to if they need anything. I will do all I can to help them and I`ve already done that. I will always try and help out any goalkeeper, and I have a really good relationship with them, especially Christian, who I have played with now for four years. I am really looking forward to seeing how his career progresses. We`ve got some very good talent at this club and that includes Rob Sanchez too. He`s a big talent that has got a lot to learn, but he has got all the tools there. For me, it`s now all about being the best-possible goalkeeping coach I can be.'
