Experienced Hughes Becomes First Signing

New manager Sami Hyypia has made his first signing since taking on the job and it comes in the shape of Northern Ireland international Aaron Hughes.

The 34 year old has plied his trade with clubs such as Newcastle United, Aston Villa and Fulham previously, but the versatile defender joins us from Queens Park Rangers after leaving them this summer, and he has put pen to paper on a one year contract.

Speaking to the Official Site as the signing was announced, Hyypia said.

'We wanted to bring in another experienced defender, and Aaron fits the bill - having played at Premier League, Champions League and international level. I have played against Aaron a few times during my time at Liverpool and also for Finland, and I know his qualities and what he will give us.'

Hyypia goes on to say that he feels Hughes is an intelligent footballer with a great pedigree, and his mentality and approach to the game will be an asset to our dressing room moving forward - especially following the loss of Matt Upson.

'He has that experience I wanted to bring into the squad, which alongside our other senior players, will help out younger players continue to develop and progress in the first team.'

Hyypia finishes by saying that he knows 'overall' that we still have some work to do in terms of recruitment this summer, but hopefully Aaron will be the first of those he wants to bring in and he knows that everybody is working hard behind the scenes to make sure others follow.

Hughes flew out to our training camp earlier today to join the squad.

Following his debut back in 1997, Hughes has gone on to play in more than 450 Premier League games, and he has 90 international caps for his country to his name.
