Inigo Calderon believes Albion are better equipped for their play-off push this season as the promotion race continues to heat up.
The Seagulls are currently positioned in 7th place - kept out of the top six only by Leicester's superior goal difference - are primed for a promotion charge on the back of their memorable victory over rivals Crystal Palace on the 17th.
With parallels to be drawn with last season, where Albion eventually fell away in the business end of the campaign - Calderon, who was named PFA Player in the Community at Sunday night's Football League awards, told the Press Association he feels the team are better prepared to make a go of it this time round.
The 31-year-old Spaniard explained, "Palace was a massive win and one that the fans loved. It was also good for us because it came on the back of three games without a win, it was important to get the winning mentality back going into the international break.
"Now we have eight games against some tough teams, starting with Nottingham Forest on Saturday. You have to be in with a chance with maybe five games left, not necessarily in the top six but seventh or eighth.
"For me we are better this year. We are more prepared to push for the play-offs so we will see what happens."
And with reports emerging last week that manager Gus Poyet allegedly rejected a move to Premier League Reading after holding talks, Calderon has expressed his delight at the Uruguayan's decision to stay and finish the job at the Amex.
"I'm happy he has decided to stay, it's important for us. I want him to be with us until at least the end of the season. Maybe in the summer something will happen.
"Being a big selfish I want him to be with us because we want to push for a play-off spot and go up into the Premier League."
