Audacious bid for Dutch defender thwarted
An ambitious move for highly-rated Dutch defender Virgil van Dijk, a player with an abundance of top flight interest, was yesterday rejected.
The Seagulls are believed to have lodged a bid of around £2m for the 21-year-old prospect, although it appears FC Groningen, the Eredivisie club where he has made over 50 first team appearances, are holding out for a fee of closer to £5m.
Sunderland, Newcastle and Everton have both been reported to be tracking the 6ft 4 centre-half in recent months, with the Magpies especially keen to bring in another defender in the January window.
It remains to be seen whether Albion will follow up on their interest, though it certainly signals the intent from Tony Bloom to back Gus Poyet with the funds to not only strengthen their promotion push but also build for a bright future.
